How to Dub a Video Online: Equipment, Method, Solo or Group
How to dub a video from your browser, solo or remotely with others: minimum gear, rythmo band prep, recording and common mistakes to avoid.

Not long ago, dubbing a video took a studio, installed software and someone to prepare the rythmo band (a scrolling dubbing script synced to the actor's lips). Today, everything can be done online: preparing the text, timing it to the picture, recording your voice and even dubbing with others, each from home. Here is how to dub a video online, from equipment to the final take.
In short
- Solo: a recent browser, headphones and a microphone are enough.
- As a group: everyone joins the session through a link, with their own headphones.
- Method: prepare the video and the rythmo band, do a test take, record, listen back.
Minimum equipment
| Equipment | To get started | To go further |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | computer or phone | computer, to see the band larger |
| Headphones | wired earbuds or closed-back headphones | closed-back headphones, which isolate well |
| Microphone | your phone's or headset's mic | USB mic placed 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) from your mouth |
| Room | a quiet room | a room with curtains, a rug and furniture (less echo) |
Headphones are the only essential item: without them, the video's sound leaks back into the mic and mixes with your voice. Avoid wireless earbuds while recording: their slight delay can shift your voice out of sync with the picture.
Prepare the video and the rythmo band
- Choose a video you have the right to use: your own, one under a suitable license, or royalty-free content. A clip of 30 seconds to 2 minutes is ideal to start.
- Upload it to an online rythmo band tool: the text is transcribed automatically, with the timing of each word and one role per character.
- Proofread and adapt the text: fix misheard words, separate the characters, and rewrite the lines if you are doing a parody or an adaptation.
- Adjust the timings: mainly check the start and end of each line on the band.
Each step is detailed, with screenshots, in the guide to creating a rythmo band. Not sure what a rythmo band is? Start with our definition.
Dubbing solo
Press play, follow the sync bar and say each word when it touches the bar. A few tips:
- Do a test take and listen back first: it reveals a mic level that is too low, an echo or a misplaced word.
- Fix one thing per take: an earlier entrance, a slower word, a stronger intention.
- Several characters? Record them one after another, changing your voice, instead of doing everything in one go.
Dubbing as a group, remotely
Online dubbing lets you perform a scene with friends, a class or a troupe without being in the same room. With the collaborative mode, the organizer creates a session and sends a link; everyone picks a role and records their voice on the same video.
To make the session go well:
- check beforehand that everyone has headphones and an up-to-date browser;
- hand out the script in advance, with one intention per line;
- name one person to direct: they start the takes and note what needs redoing;
- begin with a group test take, then record scene by scene.
To turn the session into a game (as a trio, solo, timing challenges), see our guide to the dubbing night.
Common mistakes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You can hear the video in the recording | no headphones, sound on the speakers | plug in headphones |
| The voice lags behind the picture | wireless earbuds, or reading the text too early | wired headphones, watch the bar instead of the text |
| Lots of echo | empty room, bare walls | record in a furnished room, mic closer to your mouth |
| Sound distorts on shouts | mic too close | step back for loud passages |
| The sentence does not fit in the time | adapted text too long | shorten the line instead of speaking faster |
Export and share
Once the take is approved, export the dubbed video in the right format: 16:9 for YouTube, 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Before publishing, check the rights to the original video and get the agreement of everyone who lent their voice.

Frequently asked questions
Can you dub online on a phone? Yes, with a recent browser and wired earbuds. A computer is still more comfortable for correcting the text and adjusting the timings.
Do I need to install software? No. Everything happens in the browser: rythmo band preparation, recording and export.
Is there a free trial? Yes. Import, transcription and text editing are available without an account. With an account, the free trial generates your first video in 720p with a watermark. The 1080p export without a watermark is unlocked video by video with credits (credit packs from €1.99), or for all your videos with the Unlimited subscription (€9.99 per month). See pricing.
